It's all in the details....decorating with books

When decorating a room it's very important to remember the details. What better way to make a room more personal and comfy than with books. These literary treasures are for more than just reading! Books can be beautiful and say something about you, your interests and your style.

You only need a couple of books in a small pile and with some kind of vase or other item on top to make a room a lot more personal.

When arranging your books vertically on shelves, start with the tallest book on the left side of the shelf and proceed so the shortest is on the right. The reason for this is that as in reading, your eyes start observing from left to right.

To add interest, don’t arrange all of the books vertically. Place some horizontally on the shelves which will enable you to place decorative items on a few of the books.

Create variety by mixing books with accessories on your bookshelves. Leave a shelf or two empty to give the eye a place to rest. You can also paint the back wall of your bookcase a bright color to tie in with your color scheme. The paint color will also serve to highlight your books and collectibles on the shelves.

Place books on your coffee table. They can serve as conversation pieces, complement your other accessories, add color, or add height to decorating items.

The greatest part is they are relatively inexpensive and you probably have them already scattered around your house. Go to second hand stores, garage saling, bargain centers, etc. to pick up fantastic literature that will not only look good in your home, but be of some use on rainy days. We live in Oregon, right? Books + rainy days = LOVE

Dare to be bold! {Inspired by Leslie}

Amazing BLACK walls with beautiful WHITE molding!

Who doesn't like the color black? Whether it's in your wardrobe, decor and my personal favorite, interior decorating, black can mean so many things. From creating a slim look, masking imperfections, to enriching a space, black can be used in many applications.

First, let's talk a little about the color itself and what it means in your space. The color black is dramatic and sophisticated. It's also a bold color, but that is no reason to avoid it. In fact, when used correctly black can unify the look you are going for, whether it is old-fashioned country or modern contemporary. Black doesn't need to be overwhelming to make a statement, and when you know how to use black to complement your decor, you'll discover how versatile it is.

In this case we are using the color black for the drama, so don't hide from it...embrace it! If there is adequate lighting for your space, this idea speaks volumes. But remember this combo isn't for everyone. It's bold and dramatic and well very black!

Is your house ready for the holiday?

Well there’s no denying it – the holidays are fast approaching, bringing with them the ever-mixed-bag of emotions: fear, elation, dread, reunion, love, celebration and hope.

So every week, for the next 6 weeks until Thanksgiving, here at Cherry City Interiors & Design we will share with you 7 tips, tricks and ideas to hopefully help you navigate to prepared, memorable and joyous celebrations.
Weekly Tips – Week #1

7 Pre-Holiday, Pre-Preparation Pesky Particulars
This is a list of those little “I should fix that” projects. It’s a good place to start.
  1. Tighten loose drawer pulls and hinges. And if drawers or doors are squeaking, oil them.
  2. Clean out and organize your kitchen utensil drawers.
  3. Replace burned out light bulbs. And clean out bugs and cobwebs.
  4. Chop and stack firewood in a dry place.
  5. Sharpen knives.
  6. Polish your silver.
  7. Make sure your first aid kit is complete and in a handy place.
Ok, that’s this weeks list of preparation “to do’s”. Not too bad – eh? We hope that it has inspired you to ease into the preparations. Feel free to share this and as always, we welcome your comments and questions.

Take a walk on the Wild Side

Leopard print throw blanket
Leopard, zebra, and alligator print...Oh my!

Yes ladies and gentlemen (ladies more so than the gents!) I mean animal print can be a decor option for your home. So sharpen your claws and let me hear your roar!

What can be more seductive than bringing in animal print to your home? Why not take a walk on the wild side this year. Now, this does not mean you wallpaper you room with zebra print and reupholster you sofa in leopard print and call it good. Just a hint is a step in the right direction!

As 2012 isn't over yet, you still have time to transform your domestic living space with undomesticated animal prints. Think boldly with bright zebra, cheetah, giraffe or leopard prints. For a more subtle look use snakeskin, crocodile or cowhide...the list goes on!

Design Idea: Zebra

The timeless black and white color combination of zebra stripe is this season in decor. A zebra's white stripes are designed for camouflaging in nature, but when this animal print is used in adding some pizazz it won't be anything less than brazen!

So you may be asking, where exactly do I add animal print to my home? Personally, I slip it in unbeknownst to my boyfriend by adding a throw blanket with luscious leopard print to our bed, a pillow or two to the sofa or maybe a very subtle animal print area rug.

Here are some things to consider:
  • Take scale into consideration when using animal prints, especially if you're a beginner. If you want to just introduce animal print don't add a large piece, start small with a pillow or reupholster your arm chair.
  • Can tigers, cheetahs and leopards all roam together in one room? Totally. People are now mixing animal prints together so mix and match away.

How will you incorporate animal print into your home this year?
